The green lung breathes again. One year after its launch, the “Serra do Açor Forest” reforestation project sees great progress. More than 570,000 trees of fire-resistant species will have been planted by the end of 2022 with the support of Jerónimo Martins.
A new forest: resilient to fires, sustainable and productive. This is “Floresta Serra do Açor” project’s final goal. In the first five years, 85% of the area to reforest will combine pine with native species. Most of them regenerate naturally after felling, thus ensuring continuity of the forest.
Portugal’s largest expanse of green disappeared in a single day, in the fiercest forest fire of the past 100 years. Fires also consumed part of its History, but beneath the ashes are the seeds of reforestation.
